Sometimes I clown on the representation argument as a black person because it feels a bit lazy or brittle to hide behind.

1. It gives a pass to do work that isn't remarkable because you can hide behind an identity
2. It reinforces ideas that certain careers aren't made for certain people -- or worse, certain careers **are**[\[1\]](#fn1)

Neil deGrass Tyson puts it really well:
