A painfully obvious and oft cited example: cars.

Cars started out as a luxury and innovation ^d533e6 but are now a proximal cause for American sedentism and distancing of communities of families and friends. Cars also brought about the rise of shopping mall plazas off of major interstate highways. Cities in the 21st century are built for cars instead of people due to the tragedy of the commons.
